What this person actually does
The work is picking, packing, marking orders fulfilled, and often receiving deliveries. All of it lives in orders and inventory.
Two reasons to keep this tight, and neither is about trust. The practical one is that a packing station is a shared, often unattended screen, so whatever that login can reach is effectively reachable by anyone who walks past. The second is that a narrow view is faster to work in, because the person is not navigating past things that are not their job.
This role also turns over more than any other, which makes offboarding a recurring task rather than an occasional one.
The two layers

Shopify access to grant
Grant only what the physical work requires. Shopify's permission labels change from time to time, so these are described by what they control rather than quoted as exact checkbox names. Check the current names in your own admin.
- Orders: view and fulfil.
- Inventory, where they also receive deliveries and adjust counts.
- Shipping label creation, if that is part of the packing process.
- Individual accounts, even on a shared station, so a mis-fulfilment can be traced to a person rather than to a workstation.
Access to withhold, and why
- Customer records. Packing does not require customer history.
- Finance and reports. No part of the job needs revenue visibility.
- Products and settings. Editing a listing from the packing bench is an accident waiting for a busy afternoon.
- Discounts and refunds, which belong with whoever handles customer resolution.
Rooms they belong in
The Fulfillment role gives the packing team the rooms they need without the rest of the workspace.
- The fulfilment or packing room, where the daily queue lives.
- A goods-in room, if receiving is part of the job.
- Not marketing, finance or management rooms.
- Not the customer support room, unless they handle enquiries too, which in small stores they sometimes do.
Offboarding
This role turns over often, especially around peak, so treat offboarding as a routine task rather than an exception. Set an end date for every seasonal hire on the day they start.
Check shared workstations specifically. A browser left signed in on a packing station is access that survives the person leaving, and nobody thinks of it because there was no account to remove.
